FRANKLIN – Thursday, December 15, 2016

The Franklin Community Swimming and Diving team kept things warm on Thursday, a cold December night, against the Mid-State Conference foe Martinsville. With the focus on preparing for the Johnson County Meet, the Grizzly Cubs had some stellar swims on their way to sweeping a pair of wins. The Lady Grizzly Cubs won 11 of the 12 events to mark a 128-58 win. The Men’s team swept the 12 events, resulting in a 127-49 win.

Coach DeWitt was ecstatic with some of the individual performances:

“It was our intention to prepare the team line-up for the county meet, so the athletes were placed in some hotly contested events for relay spots. We had athletes across the board step up and swim fast in a mid-season dual meet, which can be difficult at times. Kudos to the athletes for continuing to commit to swimming fast regardless of the circumstances.”

Swimming in their off-events, the Grizzly Cubs had a few notable performances. Two of the big races came from Aaron Lamm, who was a double winner on the night, taking the 100 yard and 200 yard freestyles (22.82 and 49.48 respectively). His great swims solidified him on the County 400 Freestyle Relay team, a big achievement for the senior leader.

Another notable performance came from new swimmer, Wyatt Taylor, who swam in just his 2nd varsity race. He swam to a 1:16.89 in the 100 Breaststroke, good enough for 3rd place.

Carla Gildersleeve, swimming just one individual event on the night, broke the school record in the 200IM, with a time of 2:06.47.

The Grizzly Cubs will be back in action tomorrow at Indian Creek as they compete for a pair of County Titles at 9am. The meet is expected to finish around noon, so it’s the perfect morning our for those looking for a quick chlorine fix! FRANKLIN

A season approaching a holiday break is always a unique time for a swim meet, as distractions can arise from excitement for the holiday season. On Tuesday night against visiting Columbus North, there weren’t many distracted athletes on the Franklin Community side. Franklin girls took 10 of the 11 events, while the boys managed to pull off 10 of the 11 events as well. Both sides cruised to 157-65 and 126-96 wins for the girls and boys, respectively. Coach DeWitt felt that the team’s performance was highlighted by the enthusiasm shown throughout the team.

“Fun swimming is fast swimming. Fast swimming is fun swimming. Sometimes, it’s hard to control which comes first, but tonight it was apparent that the athletes approached the meet with great enthusiasm. I have to credit the kids for bringing that approach to an early season meet. We can get better in terms of preparedness on the second half of the meet, but aside from that, we were prepared.”

The meet kicked off in impressive fashion for the girls and boys alike with the girls 200 Medley Relay winning team of Scarlet Friend, Gabby Hoffman, Carla Gildersleeve, and Abi Gibson taking first with a time of 1:51.13. Equally impressive Griffin Edwards, Michael Couet, Max Kramer, and Jacob Destrampe teamed up to break the 1:40 barrier with a time of 1:38.98.

Things didn’t slow down from there. Carla Gildersleeve, a double winner on the night, started thing quickly winning the 200 Freestyle with a 1:54.99. Sarah Hoffman and Lina Caudill rounded out the 1-2-3 finish both finishing under 2:01. Jacob Destrampe continued the momentum taking the boys 200 Freestyle with a 1:45.82, well ahead of last season’s early season times.

Ali Terrell and Griffin Edwards, sophomores for Franklin, both took the pair of 200IM wins, winning in times of 2:10.22 and 2:01.54, respectively. Anna McCahill and Gabby Hoffman swam to season best times, taking 2nd and 3rd points for the team. Michael Couet also had a huge early season swim, helping the team out with a close fought 2nd place finish (2:02.18).

The 50 free, a race typically won and lost by tenths and hundredths, was as exciting as ever during the girls 50 freestyle. Scarlet Friend in come-from-behind victory, squeaked out a 1st place finish with a time of 24.76. Ella Pheifer and Abi Gibson, both with phenomenal early season finishes, finished 3rd and 4th respectively. The boys race wasn’t quite the same close race. Freshman Max Kramer, in his high school debut, threw down a 22.45 for the win.

Coach Jerden was elated with his crews’ performances on the night, “I was very pleased with the overall attention to detail and aggressiveness of our racing. It’s just a good feeling to get an understanding of where we are at and then, of course, where we want to go from this point.”

Coach Ty Hoffman’s team took things from there, where the ladies on the boards finished 1- 2- 3. Senior Maddie Powell led the group with 186.55 points from her 6 dives. On the boys side, Gauge Creech faced one of his toughest match-ups of the year in Columbus senior Kaemon Jiles and fell short, with 219.45 points alongside a second place finish.

Franklin swimmers came out of the diving break red-hot with two sub-minute 100 Butterfly’s, Gildersleeve (57.00) and Anna McCahill (59.67) leading the charge. In the same race, Meghan Meinczinger, a freshman, lowered her lifetime best by over a half second (1:06.33).The boys answered with their own rendition as Max Kramer won the race handedly (54.56). The bigger swim, however, came from Sophomore Shane O’Sullivan, who was right off his lifetime best with a time of 57.24.

The 100 Freestyle was a tough battle between Abi Gibson, Ella Pheifer, and Columbus senior Darby Coles. Pheifer eventually fall to North’s Coles in the final 30 yeards. Gibson would finish in 3rd, while freshman Alex Hart finished 59.44. Franklin Seniors Aaron Lamm and Chance Gildersleeve made a rare appearance in some short events finishing 1st and 3rd in a hotly contested 100 freestyle.

The 500 Freestyle had a rather “youthful” look on the girls side with all participants being underclassmen. Sarah Hoffman and Jessie Fraley had a very exciting race, both leading the charge for the Grizzly cubs, as Franklin would go on to finish 1- 2- 4 alongside Lina Caudill. Jacob Destrampe dominated the boys side, swimming away from the field in a blistering time of 4:43.65. Brock Lock picked up where he left off from his sophomore campaign finishing with a 5:15.71.

The lady Grizzly Cubs recorded the next win in the 200 Freestyle relay with a team of Scarlet Friend, Ali Terrell, Abi Gibson, and Ella Pheifer. Their time of 1:41.84 is the fastest team time of the short season. The boys, with an experienced group, also won the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:31.43) with a team of Max Kramer, Michael Couet, Aaron Lamm, and Chance Gildersleeve.

In quite possibly the best race of the night, the 100 Backstroke featured 3 athletes, finishing in sub-minute times. It was Alexandra Nusawardhana of Columbus out in front with the win, while Friend, Fraley, Hart recorded a 2nd-3rd-4th place finish. The boys backstroke also had a tight race, where Griffin Edwards came out victorious in a time of 55.65.

Breaststroke wrapped the individual events up with wins from both Ali Terrell and Michael Couet. Terrell, with her second win of the night ran away from the field, posting a season-best time. Couet, a junior, looked good his season debut, swimming to a time of 1:01.19. Other notable performances came from Reagan Hendricks , who achieved a personal best time.

The Girls and Boys Swimming and Diving program will continue their seasons next week by visiting the Golden Bears of Shelbyville next Tuesday, November 29th at 5:30.

The events are considerably shorter, with most events being cut in half. Our current program record is 9 alumni, but this year we have a goal of having more than a dozen of our own “back home.” Whether you come to swim one event, 4 events, or simply want to come check things out, you’re welcome to partake!

The Franklin Community Girls’ swimming and diving team kicked off the season with a 153 – 69 win over county rival Center Grove.

Franklin won all 12 of the 12 events to amass the 84 point victory, with big swims across the board from the Franklin underclassmen.

“We gave our freshman an opportunity to swim some on events in their high school debut in hopes of giving them some momentum to begin the year. They’re a wonderful group of young ladies that certainly deserved that kind of spotlight and we were very pleased with how they responded.”

The 200 Medley Relay team of Jessie Fraley, Gabby Hoffman, Meghan Meinczinger, and Ella Pheifer kicked off the meet taking the first event with a time of 1:55.75. The Grizzly Cub women followed up that win with a trio of event wins in the 200 Freestyle, 200 Individual Medley, and the 50 Free. Sarah Hoffman took the 200 Free with a lifetime best of 1:59.45 in her high school debut. Immediately following, it was Jessie Fraley winning to 200 IM with a time of 2:15.79. Scarlet Friend rounded out the first half of the swimming, winning with a quick early season time: 25.12.

Franklin continued the impressive morning into diving taking 1-2-4. Led by Maddie Powell, the Grizzly Cub ladies were in impressive early season form. Coach Ty Hoffman was elated with their performances.

“For us, it was a great early season meet across the board. We have alot of work to do, but I was very pleased with Maddie Powell, who seems to be exactly where she should be.”

Coming out of the diving break, it was junior Ella Pheifer with the 100 Butterfly win 1:03.11 alongside a pair of great freshman swims by Meghan Meinczinger and Alex Hart (1:07.06) and (1:07.34).

Carla Gildersleeve, a sophomore, put together a solid swim to win the 100 Freestyle with a quick time: 54.04. Sarah Hoffman and Arden Friend rounded out the top 3 finishes with times of 57.07 and 1:00.29, respectively.

Next event up was the 500 Freestyle, where Freshman Lina Caudill put on quite a show throughout the long distance race. Her time of 5:29.18 was exactly what the coaches were looking for from an early season freshman swim.

The Grizzly Cubs continued their streak of winning, picking up wins in the 200 Freestyle Relay and the 400 Freestyle relay. Gildersleeve ,Fraley, Sarah Hoffman, and Friend had a close win in the 200 Freestyle over another Franklin relay. The 400 Freestyle team of Pheifer, Friend, Friend, and Gabby Hoffman also impressed with their winning time of 3:54.42.

Wrapping up the individual events, the Franklin ladies scored wins in the 100 Backstroke and 100 Breaststroke; the winning athletes were Ali Terrell and Gabby Hoffman, respectively. Ali Terrell, sophomore, raced out to an early lead and held on to win in an “off-event”in a lifetime best (59.93), while Gabby Hoffman had another early season fast time in her event (1:11.15).

The Lady Cubs alongside the boys team will host the Bull Dogs of Columbus North next Tuesday, November 22nd at the FCHS Natatorium (5:30pm) before the head into Thanksgiving Break training.

FCHSSND ATHLETES SET TO BEGIN THE SEASON: GIRLS – OCT 24TH / BOYS – NOV 7TH

Greetings Family, Friends, and Fans of Franklin Swimming & Diving,

FCHSSnD (Franklin Community Swimming & Diving) ladies begin official practice in less than two weeks! The boys will be shortly thereafter beginning on November 7th. We’re beyond excited to begin what’s slated to become a historic year. We do, however, need to complete a few checklist items before each athlete can begin their journey. Before October 24th, each athlete must do the following items:

• Physical / Concussion Form / Sudden Cardiac Arrest form filled out and on file in the Franklin Athletic Office

• Purchase Team Pack (Apparel) – contact Dawn O’Sullivan if you missed the October 9th deadline

Also, please remember that we will have an upcoming suit fitting on October 25th at 3:15pm after school. Athletes must have money on hand if they haven’t already paid for to make purchase. It is imperative that all suits are ordered at this time so that we can have our suits by the first meet.
